It was sunset, and we were headed back to Shoshone after a fire near Picabo Desert Road. We had borrowed Jerry Sabala's new International tanker which was overheating. Randy had positioned himself on the winch deck, braced against the front fender and brush guard, using the "fog" nozzle to cool the radiator as we drove. I hit a hole in the road so hard that it instantly stopped the tanker, broke several gages in the dashboard and sent cigarette butts and ashes flying in the cab. The momentum carried.Randy over the brush guard (still holding on to the nozzle) and rolling down the road in front of the tanker. There was that eternal moment of stillness as the dust settled. Any other human being would have remained down for the count. Randy stood up, brushed himself off, put his hardhat back on and yelled at me "let's go!! We never talked about that incident.again. Randy was a very tough man, and a very dear friend.
