This letter is from Chris Boerger, Kirk’s longtime friend from Crookston.
Kirk was one of my best friends during my teenage years, College, and beyond. We were in each other’s weddings, hunted, fished, rode 4 wheelers, and partied together. Basically, we experienced life together.
Kirk was a very proud guy of many things, a few of which were his family, his heritage, and his business success. He was also a larger than life guy who lived his life like most of us wish we would have.
Kirk never did anything ordinary or just enough. Everything had to be bigger and better than the last one he saw. Like the 30 foot bar behind their house in Twin Falls, complete with a roof, or his spear fishing house that had a loft, or making his buddy (AKA; Boerger) sit on top of ten cases of beer on the back rack of his 4 wheeler until we got to the fishing spot down in Aunt Polly’s slough. Who does that …… Rongen does.
I don’t know how many times I heard about being 100% Norwegian. He thought that was awesome, I’m sure because it wasn’t ordinary. I spent enough time with Kirk that I saw his 100% Norwegian affect his decisions many times. One joke Chuck loved to tell was: Why does my brother in Fertile have a round barn ……. So the Norwegians wouldn’t get stuck in the corners.
There are literally hundreds of stories I could tell. There is one I will never forget that kind of personifies Kirk I think. It was 1990 and Kirk and I were living in the Rongen legacy trailer house at college in Moorhead. Remember this was Kirk mid-season of football. He was 6 foot 4 and 320 pounds. We ran out of beer at our party in the trailer, so Kirk and I went and got another keg. When we got back I opened the door and Kirk carried the 16 gallon keg in on his shoulder. But as he ducked to get though the door he lost his balance and the keg landed on the floor. It happened to land on edge and stuck partially through the floor. He gave me that 100% Norwegian grin and tapped the keg as it sat in the middle of the floor and partied on.
I give my deepest sympathies to Ann-Pell, their kids, the logue’s, and the Rongen family who treated me as family throughout my life.

Kirk loved football. He spent numerous unpaid hours helping our kids become better. I do not know of anyone who knew more about football than him! He would yell at my son, "Peters, make a play!" We loved him for giving of his time to help all the kids. He was a successful guy who gave back. He lived life to the fullest. He is irreplaceable. God bless his family. God bless his memory. Kirk was a man with many sides - serious business man, a quiet man until you got to know him, FUN and boisterous crazy guy, a wonderful friend and most of all a man who adored his family. These photos represent memories I have of time spent with the Rongens during various holidays when they welcomed me into their loving family. Kirk's love for his kids and AP was so obvious. I hope they find comfort in that knowledge throughout their lives.
Kirk being missed is, and will continue to be, an understatement.
