Coach Kleinkopf had a profound influence on my life that I only realized years later. Coach taught me perseverance, dedication, the value of hard work, and a sense of fairness I would not have otherwise been exposed to. I wasn’t a particularly good runner, but the values I picked up from him propelled me to a career in the military in which I attained the highest enlisted grade, due in no small part to Coach’s influence. During my retirement ceremony in 2006, I gave thanks to Coach Kleinkopf and how I believed he inspired me to be successful. Interestingly, my in-laws had never heard me speak of Coach before, but following my military retirement, they contacted Coach out of the blue to share my comments, and even sent him a copy of the video of the ceremony with my comments. Coach was classic Coach... gracious and humble.

Coach was one of the greatest men I have ever met. His effect on me was life changing. He saw things in me I never knew I had. He literally changed the direction the rest of my life would go. The picture posted is a picture of the only 2 men I had as a track coach. One, of course, is Coach Kleinkopf and the other is Bill Dellinger, my college coach. Both men in track and field Hall of Fames. How lucky could an athlete get. While coaching at CSI, my cross country team was going to a meet at the University of Washington and I knew that my college coach would be there. I bought plane ticket for both Coach and Donna to go with me and the team for the soul purpose of taking the picture posted. No picture is complete in my track life without Coach in it. Simply one of the greatest men I have ever met!

The world is a better place because Coach K. was in it; he positively impacted so many lives. His coaching achievements were impressive, but the love and respect he earned from his athletes are the greater achievement.
I had the privilege of seeing him more frequently in my adult life once my daughters grew old enough to compete and as I began coaching my own teams. One time I said to him, "I've had a good life, with many happy memories, but those years running in high school are some of the best." He looked me in the eye, smiled, and said, "Mine, too."
Coach K. is loved by so many, who could ask for much more than that out of life? To his family: thank you for sharing him with us. We already miss him.

The name our family gave to Coach Kleinkopf was the runner whisperer. He always knew what to say to our athletes to buoy them up. What a great influence he was to our kids. I second the idea to go for a run in his honor. It has been a pleasure and a blessing to know you. You will be missed.

To The Family of Jerry Kleinkopf,
I just wanted to pass on my condolences as I just heard of the passing of Jerry. In 2004, I had the opportunity to cross paths with Jerry at the State XC Meet. We, Soda Springs, hosted the State Meet that year and I was fortunate to meet him and his wonderfully sweet wife Donna. I knew about the Kleinkopfs as the cute couple at every State Meet, but was blessed with the opportunity to officially meet them that year. A friendship was formed and one that I cherished. I looked forward to visiting with him and Donna at the State Meets and also at the meet in Twin Falls when we would attend. There will be a void in the Track and Cross Country Community in the State of Idaho, and certainly big shoes to fill. I will miss them both and hope you can draw comfort knowing how much they positively impacted the lives of youth in our State.
I will be thinking of the Kleinkopf's a little more this weekend at the State XC Meet.
Sincerely,
Jeff Horsley

Dear Kleinkopf family,
My deepest condolences. Sending all my love and prayers your way. Jerry was and always will be such an incredible man. Jerry was like another grandfather to me. I was the only girl hurdler at TF for about two years so I spent those two years day in and day out with Jerry. His presence brought a calmness to my crazy teen life. I looked forward to practices to see him and hear of his stories when he ran track. He was so happy and positive not matter what. I, and I’m sure all the track team members, appreciated him and his wife’s constant love and support. He braved any kind of weather to be able to cheer us on. Jerry is one of my favorite people and I’ll always keep him close in my heart.

Coach Kleinkopf made such an impact on my life. The way he taught, cared & supported me has never been forgotten. Over the years many times I’ve given thanks for Coach Kleinkopf as he made my learning experience as a track & cross country runner one that has always stayed with me. Ethics. Encouragement. Team work.

Dear Kleinkopf family-
My deepest sympathies on the loss of a great man. It was a pleasure to be an athlete under his direction. He had a way of making everyone feel special and I was no exception. It makes me happy to know he is reunited with his sweet wife. They were a dynamic duo. May we all go out on a run with Coach Kleinkopf in our hearts this week. I can’t think of a better way to honor a man who helped instill a love of running in so many.
Love,
Brittany Ward Johnson

Kurt. Kelly and families.
I am profoundly saddened by the passing of "Coach" Kleinkopf. I have so many memories of Jerry and having him as a coach, a mentor and most of all a kind friend. Kurt, I hope you and all the family can find peace in his passing. Now he joins your mother and the rest of your family on the other side of the vail. We all had great times throughout junior high and high school! Jerry had such a positive affect on so many of the students and athletes he came in contact with. Thinking back on our time together has helped me reflect on the positive influence he had on me. RIP Coach!!

Such a good man and a great coach. I loved having him as a coach and he taught the philosophy of competition and that helped me a lot. I always said hello to coach Kleinkopf in passing in the halls. He touched so many lives and hearts of competing. My condolences to his family. I hope to play on his team again.
