Elaine H. Gardner, age 93, of Saratoga Springs, Utah, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012 in Orem, Utah.
She was born February 24, 1919 in Rupert, Idaho to Joseph Hansen & Mary Ann Amanda Swensen.
Elaine grew up on a farm south of Rupert. Growing up on a farm, she milked cows, thinned beets, hauled hay, and picked potatoes. She graduated from Rupert High School in 1937, attended LDS Business College in 1937 – 1938. She worked for MH King Company the fall of 1938 to May 1939.
On May 26, 1939 she Married Orrin M. Gardner in the Logan LDS Temple. Her husband taught school in the Star Valley School District in Star Valley, Wyoming. In 1944 they moved to Hazelton, Idaho where they farmed and raised their family. In 1960 she started working at A & P (a potato processing plant) at nights for 3 ½ years. She worked for Hazelton Bean Growers one winter and spring and went to Business College at night after work. When she finished the course she worked for United Oil Company as a secretary for 8 years. In 1977 Orrin and Elaine began helping with the care of their daughter’s children. Before her husband’s death in 1988, they became Foster Grandparents at the Eden Elementary School.
Elaine returned as a Foster Grandparent in 1989. After the grand children were raised she moved to Federal Way, Washington and lived with her son, Gary and his wife Betty and their family. When Gary died she and Betty her daughter-in-law moved to Saratoga Springs, Utah.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Linda) Gardner of Bothell, Washington, daughter, Cheryl O’Brien of Twin Falls, Idaho, and daughter-in-law, Betty Gardner of Saratoga Springs, Utah; 21 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orrin M. Gardner; son, Gary O. Gardner; grandson, Shannon C. Mangum; great granddaughter, Tierra Ann Mangum; parents, Joseph and Amanda Hansen; and all of her siblings (Sisters; Mabel, Mary, Lillian, Lucille and VerLee and a brother; Rulon) and son-in-law Dan O’Brien.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Hazelton 1st Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow in the Hazelton Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. for family and friends prior to the funeral.
