Richard C. (Dick) Kevan
Richard Calvin (Dick) Kevan died at age 88 at his farm southwest of Twin Falls on July 26th. Richard had been battling cancer for three and a half years. He was born on May 24, 1926 to Charles Wallace Kevan and Martha Kathern Nicholson (Kate) Kevan. He was the youngest of their five boys but also had an older half-brother and half-sister. His family lived between Buhl and Filer when he was born and later moved to the Salmon tract south of Curry crossing. He attended Pleasantview country school and Twin Falls High School excelling in sports, especially football and track. He graduated in 1944. With four brothers already serving in the war Richard remained on the farm helping his father farm. He subsequently began farming for himself in 1946. He farmed on the Salmon tract for 68 years, a unique accomplishment. He also worked 20 plus winter campaigns at the sugar factory.
Richard married Carmen Vazquez in 1946 and together they raised three boys, Mark, Andy, and Tony. He and Carmen were long-time members of Twin Falls Methodist church.
Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing when the farm would allow. He was NFO local president for a time and served on the board of the Salmon Falls Canal Company. He was also active in Toastmasters, Jaycees and in Masons, achieving the level of past master in both the Hollister Lodge and Twin Falls Council. He was active in local soft ball leagues earlier in his life and bowled and played bridge. He and Carmen were members of several bridge clubs simultaneously and they enjoyed hosting bridge parties in their home. They were also avid golfers and all his children and grand-children enjoyed going out to “Muni” when they came for visits.
Richard had uncompromising integrity and will be remembered by his family and community as an exceptionally hard-working and honorable man. He was always ready to help anyone when asked and performed those acts of love and kindness with a smile. Richard and Carmen’s home was open to all, and they enjoyed the company of a variety of people.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, both his half- sister and half-brother, four sister-in-laws, and one brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife Carmen, his sons and daughter-in-laws, Mark (Barbara Howard) Kevan, Tony (Candy Del Valle) Kevan, and Andy Kevan, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and two sister-in-laws, Barbara Kevan, and Ester Kevan.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held August 11 at Rosenau Funeral Home at 11 am. Any memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Luke hospice organization or St. Lukes Mountain States Tumor Institute. His family would like to thank the staff at MSTI for their kindness and care for Richard during the past three years and to St. Lukes Hospice for their care and assistance to Richard and the family during his final days.
A luncheon will be served at Rosenau Funeral home for friends and family after the Memorial Service.
