Edward Charles Engelhart passed away on August 24, 2015 with his wife and children by his side. He was born on April 22, 1925 in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Peter and Mary (Steffan) Engelhart. A first generation American, Eddie spoke only German when he started first grade in Devils Lake. He attended St. Mary's High school in Devils Lake where he excelled in all sports especially baseball. When World War II started, he joined the Navy and served as a SeaBee in the Philippines and Hawaii. He was very proud of his military service. On September 26, 1949 he married the love of his life Monica Broden at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake, ND. Together they had seven children, Karen (Don Picotte), Rita (Ron Wilper), Richard, Bonnie (Clay Stone), Tracy ( Jesse Ponce), Susan (Chris Pease), and Tom ( Terry Hind).
His grandchildren are Jennifer, Ryan and Erin Kiefel, Andy and Mike Wilper, Cori, Ben and David Engelhart, Genevia, Ellen and Adam Stone, Sean, Brittany and Rachel Ponce, Tim, Daniel and Caitlyn Pease, and Zachary and Anthony Engelhart. He was blessed to have 19 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Josephine of Puyallup, WA and brother Kenny of Minot, ND. Eddie was the ultimate salesman. It was said many times over that he could sell ice to an Eskimo. He was a devout Catholic and cared deeply about his faith, his family and his country. He was not particularly politically involved but had an opinion or two on current events. He loved all kinds of sports but particularly baseball. He played minor league baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. In 1947 he pitched a perfect game in Jamestown, ND. He was a great storyteller, an eternal optimist and could make little children smile whenever he was around them.
He had many friends, he loved people and enjoyed being with them. He lived a long, good life. He told us he got to do everything he wanted to do except see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. and cruise through the Panama Canal again. We will miss him terribly. He was the patriarch of our family, the planner of special events and would tell you how to get where you are going even if you already knew. We all knew we could count on him for anything at anytime. He was proud of us...and we were proud of him.He was preceded in death by his parents, brother George, sister Rose, and daughter Tracy. Funeral Mass will be Thursday August 27, 2015 at 10:30 am at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 161 6th Ave. E. Twin Falls, ID. Interment will be held at a later date at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boise, ID. Arrangements are under the direction of Rosenau Funeral Home.
