Obituary of John J Sexton

John was born November 18, 1929 in Madison County, North Carolina, the ninth of twelve children born to John and Hannah Sexton. He graduated valedictorian from Mars Hill College in North Carolina and also attended Wake Forest College and graduated from St. John's Hospital with a degree in Medical Technology. John enlisted in the Air Force in 1951. He served 4 years in the Air Force retiring as a Captain. John also served seven years in the National Guard in Idaho and Colorado. John worked as a Medical Technologist in North Carolina and later in Twin Falls, Magic Valley Hospital as head technologist from 1961 to 1967. In the summer of 1967, John took a position in Denver at the Denver Clinic as head technologist. He worked there for three years before taking a position in Omaha, Nebraska at Methodist Hospital, also was working part time at Bergen Mercy Hospital and Lutheran Hospital. John returned to Twin Falls in 1979 and established Physician's laboratory, a lab that handled all the laboratory work outside of the hospital throughout Magic Valley, including nursing homes, care centers, doctor's offices and private homes. Towards the end of that time, John set up a free clinic in Twin Falls for the uninsured and underinsured working poor. It was called The Mustard Seed Clinic, a non-profit organization. The clinic is now called Wellness Tree Community Clinic. John has been recognized with numerous awards for his volunteer efforts: the Jefferson Award, which was presented in Washington D.C; Magic Valley Volunteer of the Year 2008, and others. John's story would not be complete without his spiritual journey. John joined Twin Falls Reformed Church in 1995. He served in the Stephen's Ministry, and became an elder. He continued to volunteer in the Church while he was still able. John is remembered with love by his wife Sandra Sexton, a brother Wayne Sexton and sisters Connie Brinkley, Alma Trisbee and his former wife Ruthmarie Bentley. Seven children including Sheilah (Fred) Mann, David Sexton, Chris Sexton, Brett (Sharon) Sexton, Doug Sexton, Andy (Tami) Sexton, Mark Sexton, and also seven grandchildren – Jennifer, Jeffrey, Tyler, Kathryn, Kylee, Linsey, and Hannah. Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Twin Falls Reformed Church, 1631 Grandview Dr. N, Twin Falls. Services are under the direction of Rosenau Funeral Home.
