Obituary of Donald Morris Barkley
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Twin Falls – Don Barkley went to patrol the skies with his wings on July 10, 2018. He had been battling an aggressive form of dementia for a while. He passed peacefully and had many family and friends visiting to say their final goodbyes. The family would like to thank the staff of Rosetta Homes and of Hospice Visions, especially his nurse Bethany. The care he received, and the thoughtfulness and caring nature of the staff to him and his family was amazing.
Don was born in Kelliher, Minnesota on July 18, 1935 to Roy and Orris (Hand) Barkley. He enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard and then served proudly on active duty in the United States Airforce. He married Barbara Lindberg February of 1955 and they later divorced. He found his soulmate and love of his life and married Edie (Hines) Barkley on December 19, 1975.
Don was a skilled carpenter, electrician, and building inspector, but found his passion in police work. He served with the Police Department of Galt California and later upon relocation to Idaho, served 5 years with the Jerome Police Department. He finished his career serving as Chief of Police for Filer Idaho from 1983 to 1996. He also served 17 years on the Filer City Council.
Don loved his life, his family, his career, and especially hunting and fishing. He was proud to teach his family members how to handle weapons, hunt and fish if they chose to do so. The trips with his best friend and hunting buddy Gene Kafader meant the world to him and did those trips every year including this last one.
Don was preceded in death by; his parents Roy and Orris Barkley, two brothers; Harland Barkley and Roy Barkley, his son; Robert Barkley, and his son-in-law; Todd Besler.
Don is survived by his wife of 42 years Edie Barkley, and 5 children; Cindy (Carey) Koepplin, Debi (Ron) Blair, Greg (Janice) Barkley, John (Susan) Copen, Mary Besler and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by; one sister Betty Dirk, two brothers Mark (Linda) Barkley, Jim (Barbara) Barkley.
A memorial service will be held at the Lighthouse Church located at 960 Eastland Drive in Twin Falls on Sunday, June 15, 2018 at 3:00 pm, with a meal to follow.
